Game Design Study: Pick Me Up's Ad Revenue Strategy


Ever wondered how games like Pick Me Up Generate Millions of Dollars? They use ads. Lots and lots of well-placed ads. They get you hooked, and then they start annoying you. They create a problem and then sell a solution. Here is what they do:


1. Make a fun and easy to play game

They make sure that their game is not skilled based. They want you to play their game for hours upon hours. That way they can show you more ads.


2. They keep their actual cost to produce a game low

Pick Me Up may have cost around $5,000 to $10,000 to make. That is extremely low for a game that was/is trending on the Google Play Store. They focused more on creating an addicting game rather than a one with high production value.


3. They don't care about critics

Trust me, they don't. They are not looking for rewards. They are looking to generate as much as they can off you.


4. After you get addicted, they sell you the solution

They want you to click the 'No Ads' button and purchase the 'Remove Ads' IAP. That is how they generate money. They want you to HATE watching ads and force you into purchasing the IAP. How do they do it? Read 5


5. They retain you

The game will not show a huge number of ads during the first 5 to 10 minutes. It will only start showing you ads after the game KNOWS that it retained you for a period of 1-2 days. Usually, a player will make a purchase on the 7th day, but the frequency of ads starts rising after the 1st day. Of course, they count on you buying the 'Remove Ads' option within 7 days.
