What is a Game Design Document?

Ever wondered what on earth is a game design document, also known as a GDD? It is a small document that usually starts with a table of contents and has articles that will help you develop your game. Unlike other software design docs, game design docs may or may not be technical documents. They can just tell a bit about the story, or cover what a particular group of enemies does. They usually contain absolutely zero pseudo code.

Writing a good GDD is easy. Writing one that works is extremely difficult. By 'works' I mean creating a GDD that will help you develop a game that will be successful. Many of my clients came to me with a video games. All of them complained that their awesome game is not making any money for them. Those games were well designed, but they were not designed to generate revenue.

Before you even start developing, think about what can help you make money through your video games. The more money you make, the better you will do in the industry. You will eventually be able to make the game that you always wanted to make since you were a kid. Right now, focus on creating GDDs that will work
